A group tour of Ghana with us is not a coach trip with strangers and a fixed departure date. You travel with the people you want to travel with, whether two of you, six of you or an entire club, and we plan the route together with you.

The advantage is arithmetic: the guide and the vehicle cost roughly the same per day whether two or eight people are aboard. Divided between everyone, each extra person makes it cheaper. From about five people the transport cost per head per day is in the region of a pizza back home.

We have accompanied groups of friends, families spanning three generations, choirs and school classes. What matters is less the size of the group than how much programme and how much free time it can take, and we talk about that beforehand.

This route is a suggestion, not a fixed package. Every day can be swapped, dropped or extended. We keep adjusting it with you until the trip fits.

Day by day

This is what your trip could look like. The driving times are honest, because in Ghana a stretch of road rarely takes as long as the map promises.

  1. 1

Day 1 Arrival in Accra and a joint transfer

We collect the group at Kotoka International Airport (ACC), for larger groups with several vehicles or a coaster. Then on to Kokrobite, where everyone stays in the same place.

  2. 2

Day 2 Kokrobite: arriving and finding your feet

The first day deliberately has no programme. In our experience every group needs a day to arrive in Ghana. Heat, time difference and impressions together are more than you expect. A shared meal on the beach in the evening.

  3. 3

Day 3 Accra: city, market and history

A day in the capital with Makola Market, Jamestown and the Nkrumah Mausoleum. For groups we split the market into smaller units, because walking through Makola twelve abreast does not work.

  4. 4

Day 4 Cape Coast: Cape Coast Castle and Elmina

The drive to the Cape Coast and the guided tour of Cape Coast Castle. For school groups and groups with younger participants we prepare this visit together beforehand. The place hits most people harder than expected.

  5. 5

Day 5 Kakum National Park: canopy walk

The suspension bridges 30 metres up are crossed in small groups, so it pays to be there early. Anyone who does not have a head for heights takes a forest trail below, which can be handled without any fuss.

  6. 6

Day 6 Back to Kokrobite: a free afternoon

The drive back to the coast and an afternoon with no programme. Every group has people who want to see everything and people who need a break. This day belongs to both.

  7. 7

Day 7 Into the Volta Region and on to Tafi Atome

East into the Volta Region. In the afternoon the monkey forest of Tafi Atome, where the mona monkeys are regarded as sacred by the village and are correspondingly tame. For groups with children this is regularly the highlight of the trip.

  8. 8

    Day 8 Wli Waterfalls

The walk to the lower Wli Waterfall across several suspension bridges, a good hour on a level path. If you are fit and willing, climb on to the upper fall. Swimming is allowed, so swimwear belongs in the day bag.

  9. 9

Day 9 Back to Kokrobite and a farewell evening

About five hours back to the coast. On request we arrange the last evening with drummers and dancers on the beach. For groups this can be booked as an evening of its own, rather than left to chance.

  10. 10

Day 10 Transfer to the airport and departure

A joint transfer to Accra. For larger groups we deliberately plan an early departure. Traffic in Accra cannot be calculated, and nobody wants to miss a flight twelve at a time.

What does this trip cost?

We do not quote a package price, because we do not charge one: we work without commission and without booking fees. You pay the guide, the driver, the accommodation and the entrance fees directly, at the same prices we pay. So that you still know what to expect, here is the full calculation.

Item Guide price Note
Our planning and support €0 We charge no commission and no booking fee.
Guide €20 per day A fixed daily rate that goes entirely to the guide.
Vehicle with driver from ~€50 per day Depending on distance and vehicle size, shared between everyone travelling.
Accommodation ~€15–60 per night From a simple guesthouse to a lodge. You decide the standard.
Entrance fees and guided tours ~€5–20 per site Official rates, for example Kakum, Mole or Cape Coast Castle.

Locals showing you their own country

Ghana Touristik is not run from an office in Europe. We are locals from Kokrobite, about 30 kilometres west of Accra. This is where we run the Just Lad's restaurant, where our beachfront apartment is, and where every trip we plan begins.

You notice the difference on the road: you see Ghana the way we know it, not the catalogue version. We know the drivers you travel with and the guesthouses you sleep in personally. And if something goes wrong, we are there on the ground whenever you need us.

  • A local team in Kokrobite
  • Guides and drivers from the region whom we know personally
  • No commission and no booking fee

Frequently Asked Questions

How many people count as a group?

With us, from two. Here "group tour" only means that the vehicle and guide are shared between several people, not that you travel with strangers. There is no minimum number of participants as with tour operators, and your trip will not be cancelled because too few people signed up.

How large can the group be?

Up to about 16 people we arrange this with a coaster and one or two guides without difficulty. Beyond that it becomes a question of accommodation: in Kokrobite and on the Cape Coast there are few houses that can take 30 people at once. Ask us, and we will tell you openly what we can organise well.

Do you accompany school groups and clubs?

Yes. What mainly changes is the preparation: we agree the programme with the accompanying adults, prepare the visit to Cape Coast Castle in terms of content, and build in more slack. For the necessary paperwork, invitations for visa applications for instance, we provide everything the embassy asks for.

Can individual participants do their own thing?

In Kokrobite at any time, on the road only to a limited extent. As long as the group stays in one place, everyone is free. On driving days the group is tied to the vehicle. Going your own way then needs a second car, which we can arrange but which also costs.

How does payment work for a group?

Exactly as for individual travellers: you pay for the services directly on the spot, we take no commission and collect nothing in advance. In practice, one person in the group usually pays and settles up internally. On request we provide an itemised breakdown for that.

Are there fixed departure dates?

No. You tell us when you have time and we plan the trip around your dates. That is the essential difference from a group tour out of a catalogue: there is no date you have to fit around, and no fellow travellers you do not know.

More time, less time, or a different focus? These suggestions can be adapted just as freely.
