Seven days are enough to really get to know the south of Ghana. This Ghana tour deliberately stays within about 200 kilometres of Accra: you see the capital, the historic forts on the Cape Coast and the rainforest in Kakum National Park without spending every other day in the car.

The base is Kokrobite, where we live ourselves. You start and end on the beach, with two nights on the Cape Coast in between. If this is your first time in West Africa, you arrive gently instead of being thrown straight onto a long-distance route.

This route is a suggestion, not a fixed package. Every day can be swapped, dropped or extended. We keep adjusting it with you until the trip fits.

Day by day

This is what your trip could look like. The driving times are honest, because in Ghana a stretch of road rarely takes as long as the map promises.

  1. 1

Day 1 Arrival in Accra and transfer to Kokrobite

We pick you up at Kotoka International Airport (ACC), even in the middle of the night. The drive to Kokrobite takes 45 to 90 minutes depending on traffic. After that, nothing is planned but arriving: feet in the sand, a first meal, an early night.

  2. 2

Day 2 Kokrobite: village, fishing beach and first evening

The first full day belongs to the place itself. A walk through Kokrobite, the fishermen on the beach in the morning, time by the water in the afternoon. In the evening drumming and dancing groups often play on the beach. It is not a tourist show, but part of the weekly rhythm.

  3. 3

Day 3 Accra: Makola Market, Jamestown and the Nkrumah Mausoleum

A full day in the capital: Makola Market in the centre, the fishing quarter of Jamestown with its lighthouse, and the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum. Accra is loud and dense. With a guide who knows when to go where, it becomes a good day rather than an exhausting one.

  4. 4

Day 4 To the Cape Coast: Cape Coast Castle and Elmina

A morning drive along the coast to Cape Coast, roughly three hours. In the afternoon the guided tour of Cape Coast Castle, then the older Fort St. George in Elmina. Both places are hard to take in, and both belong to a journey through Ghana. Overnight on the coast.

  5. 5

Day 5 Kakum National Park: canopy walk above the rainforest

An early start for Kakum National Park: the earlier you go, the better the chance of mist above the treetops and the fewer people on the bridges. The canopy walk crosses seven suspension bridges some 30 metres above the forest floor. Back to Kokrobite in the afternoon.

  6. 6

Day 6 Kokrobite: a free day on the beach

A day with no driving. Go surfing or walk up into the hills behind the village if you like; stay put if you have seen enough. This day is deliberately left empty, and in our experience it is the one most guests remember most fondly.

  7. 7

Day 7 Transfer to the airport and departure

Depending on your flight there may still be a morning by the sea. We take you to Accra in good time. We plan the drive generously, because traffic in the capital is hard to predict.

What does this trip cost?

We do not quote a package price, because we do not charge one: we work without commission and without booking fees. You pay the guide, the driver, the accommodation and the entrance fees directly, at the same prices we pay. So that you still know what to expect, here is the full calculation.

Locals showing you their own country

Ghana Touristik is not run from an office in Europe. We are locals from Kokrobite, about 30 kilometres west of Accra. This is where we run the Just Lad's restaurant, where our beachfront apartment is, and where every trip we plan begins.

You notice the difference on the road: you see Ghana the way we know it, not the catalogue version. We know the drivers you travel with and the guesthouses you sleep in personally. And if something goes wrong, we are there on the ground whenever you need us.

  • A local team in Kokrobite
  • Guides and drivers from the region whom we know personally
  • No commission and no booking fee

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 7 days enough for a Ghana round trip?

For the south, yes. In a week you can cover Accra, the Cape Coast with Cape Coast Castle and Elmina, Kakum National Park and several beach days in Kokrobite without moving base every night. For the north with Mole National Park a week is not enough. Plan at least two weeks for that.

How much time does this route spend in the car?

Three of the seven days involve longer drives: the trip to Cape Coast (about three hours), the run to Kakum National Park and back to Kokrobite (roughly four hours together) and the two airport transfers. On the other days you stay put.

Can I change the route?

Yes, and that is the normal case. We do not sell a package. If you would rather stay two more days on the beach and skip the day in Accra, we will replan it. The route on this page is a suggestion to orient yourself by.

What does a 7-day Ghana round trip cost?

We deliberately do not quote a package price, because we take no commission and you pay most services directly on the ground. The calculation is set out openly in the table on this page: the guide costs €20 a day, and on top of that come the vehicle, accommodation, entrance fees and food. Tell us how you would like to travel and we will work out a concrete figure at no cost.

What is the minimum group size?

One person. Vehicle and guide are shared, so the price per person drops noticeably with each additional traveller. Solo travellers are just as welcome, in which case the vehicle costs fall entirely on you.

When is the best time to travel this route?

October to March, the dry season. The roads are in good condition and the canopy walk in Kakum is not slippery. June and July are the wettest months on the coast. Travelling works well then too, you just stay a little more flexible.

Other routes

More time, less time, or a different focus? These suggestions can be adapted just as freely.
